Following in the footsteps of White House predecessors, Obama served as headline speaker at the light-hearted black-tie affair, which in accordance with a 96-year tradition bars reporters.
Obama, the first black U.S. president, also poked fun at the Alfalfa Club’s founding in 1913 by a group of Southern gentlemen.
“Many you are aware that this dinner began almost one hundred years ago as a way to celebrate the birthday of General Robert E. Lee. If he were here with us tonight, the general would be 202 years old. And very confused,” Obama said.
The main stream media got it wrong of course- they labeled under some kind of political grudge match between Sarah Palin, who also attended- and Obama. Like they would start a food fight or something. What a shocker- Sarah Plain at an Obama event- let's see they are both politicians after the same power base- could be they will meet again. The Media needs to stop trying to make them polar opposites.
No what disturbs me - here Obama had a golden opportunity to extend a olive branch to Confederate Americans like myself and say a nice word or two about General Lee. His statement indicates to me that Obama knows NOTHING about Lee except his age (had he lived)- and that is what he attacked him on. Doubtless he considers Lee just another southern racist as everyone else does- a Bitter disenfranchised White Person whom- if Obama had his way- would be stricken from the historical record.
